Bermuda International Business Welcomes Bermuda's New Premier, Pamela Gordon

(HAMILTON, BERMUDA, 27th March 1997) -- With today's election of Bermuda's new Premier, The Honorable Pamela F. Gordon, JP, MP, the Bermuda International Business Association (BIBA) announced that it expects continued political and economic stability that will further bolster international business growth.

"Bermuda has a long-standing tradition of political and economic stability," said Tom Davis, Chairman of BIBA. "With this orderly transition of power, we are confident that the economy will continue to grow with international business as its driving force."

Premier Gordon becomes Bermuda's first female Premier. In October 1993 she was elected to the House of Assembly as a member of the United Bermuda Party (UBP), representing Southampton West. Prior to that, she served in the Senate since October 1990. Premier Gordon served in two different cabinet positions, first under former Premier the Honourable Sir John Swan, and later under Premier Dr. the Honourable David J. Saul. From March 1992 until March 1995, she was the Minister of Youth Development, Sports and Recreation. Premier Gordon served most recently as Minister of the Environment, Planning and Recreation.

Arthur B. Sculley, Chairman of the Bermuda Stock Exchange (BSX) echoed Mr. Davis' sentiments and added, "International business is moving our economy and we look forward to working with Premier Gordon to promote Bermuda and its attractive business environment."

Bermuda is one of the world's leading financial services and insurance centres. BIBA is an association of Bermuda companies providing quality banking, legal, accounting and management services to the international business industry.
