Mr. Geoffrey Bell QC retires from Butterfield Bank Board

Hamilton, Bermuda: 5 January, 2004 - Dr. James King, Chairman of Butterfield Bank's Board of Directors, today announced the retirement of Mr. Geoffrey Bell QC from the Board of Directors.

A member of the Board since 1987, Mr. Bell's resignation follows his appointment as a puisne judge of the Bermuda Supreme Court.

Dr. King commented: "I would like to thank Geoff for 17 dedicated and valuable years' service as a Director of Butterfield Bank. He has held a series of important positions on Board Committees, most recently as Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee. We will miss his wisdom and guidance, and wish him well on his move to the Bench."
