International and Johnson & Johnson Settle Patent Litigation

Hamilton, Bermuda and New Brunswick, NJ, April 1, 1999 - Tyco International Ltd. (NYSE-TYC, LSE-TYI, BSX-TYC) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE-JNJ), announced today that they have agreed to settle all pending patent litigation between their respective U. S. Surgical Corporation and Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. companies. This settlement brings to a close three separate patent lawsuits between the parties, involving a variety of surgical mechanical instruments. No money will change hands in the settlement, and each company has agreed not to assert these and other patents against any of the other company's products currently on the market.

Although the litigation was related exclusively to endomechanical products, the ongoing patent immunity agreement also covers suture manufacturer Ethicon, Inc., a sister company of Ethicon Endo-Surgery in the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, and Sherwood Services AG, which owns the patents relating to the Davis & Geck suture line sold by U. S. Surgical.
