MRM Announces Expected Third Quarter Earnings

Hamilton, Bermuda, September 27th 1999 -- Mutual Risk Management Ltd. (NYSE:MM, BSX: MM.BH) today announced that it expected third quarter operating earnings per Common Share, on a diluted basis, to be between $0.33 and $0.38 versus $0.37 for the same period in 1998. The projected earnings are between $0.07 and $0.12 less than the average estimate of analysts for the quarter. In addition, the Company expects to make a provision of up to $8 million ($0.16 per share on a diluted basis) relating to losses incurred on a number of terminated programs. The actual results are expected to be announced on November 4th 1999.

The shortfall in earnings is due to slower growth and lower margins in the Company's Program Business segment and in particular at its underwriting management subsidiary, Small Business Underwriters ("SBU"). SBU, which typically has a significant impact in the third quarter of each year, has experienced an increase in competition for its small business workers' compensation product and lower workers' compensation rates especially in Massachusetts. These factors led to a decrease in SBU's fee income when its reinsurance program was renewed in the third quarter. In addition, during the quarter a number of the Company's programs were not renewed due to various factors including competition, low premium levels and unprofitable results.
