Tyco Electronics Wins Contract For New Public Safety System

Pembroke, Bermuda: 21 December 2000 - Tyco Electronics, a part of Tyco International Ltd. (NYSE: TYC; LSE: TYI; BSX: TYC), today announced that its M/A-COM, Inc. unit has entered into a formal agreement with the County of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to deploy M/A-COM's OpenSky® Wireless Private Network to fulfill the County's public safety communication needs. Under this agreement, the County will take advantage of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of General Services Cooperative Purchasing Program, which provides numerous economical and operational benefits.

The contract, valued at $19.9 million over the next 3 years, calls for M/A-COM to provide OpenSky infrastructure equipment, subscriber equipment and implementation services for a countywide, digital voice and data wireless network.

OpenSky integrates digital trunked voice and packet data over an Internet Protocol (IP) based network. OpenSky uses Voice over IP (VoIP) and compression technology to provide five times the voice capacity of the traditional analog networks. This means more available network capacity when it is needed during critical situations. OpenSky's network technology creates a scalable system that translates to cost-effective network design and expansion. OpenSky also provides interoperability with analog radios, making it possible to preserve the existing public safety equipment, while cost-effectively planning radio upgrades and migration to digital equipment.

John Vaughan, vice president, M/A-COM, stated, "We are pleased that Lancaster County has chosen OpenSky for their critical public safety requirements. This order demonstrates the increasing confidence in M/A-COM's unique approach to providing wireless voice and data solutions for government entities in Pennsylvania and elsewhere in America. We are proud to include Lancaster County on our growing list of OpenSky customers."

Michael Weaver, director of Emergency Services for Lancaster County said, "First and foremost, our objective has been to identify and procure a system that would meet the demanding requirements of Lancaster County's public safety community. Since OpenSky is also being implemented for the Pennsylvania Statewide Communications Network, Lancaster County will have the advantage of seamless interoperability with appropriate State agencies during critical situations."

"The selection of M/A-COM's OpenSky Network is the culmination of several years of studies and needs analysis," said Paul Thibault, Chairman, Lancaster County commissioners. "Lancaster County is pleased to procure a system that will not only meet today's requirements, but will also provide the foundation for flexibility and scalability, allowing Lancaster County to continue enhancements in its public safety and public service organizations."
