Spring-Probe Technology from Tyco Electronics Keep Connections Tight in Tough Applications

Pembroke Bermuda and Harrisburg, PA, 15 February 2001- New connector technology from Tyco Electronics helps improve the reliability of mobile and hand-held devices. AMP high-performance spring-probe connectors offer new options for creating robust and reliable interconnections on smaller footprints, helping designers and engineers satisfy the ever-rising demands for performance, functionality and portability. Potential applications include test and measurement equipment, instrumentation, medical equipment and military devices.

Typically used for board-to-board, probe assembly, battery and input-output (I/O) connections, the connectors provide an extra measure of performance. The spring-probe contact design provides a redundant internal current path for optimal electrical performance when exposed to vibration, motion and mechanical shock, as compared to many traditional probe designs.

The connectors are custom designed for specific applications and can incorporate several contact styles, including extremely low profile and high-density configurations. They are available in through-hole and surface-mounted designs and have a wide mating tolerance range. While many of the attributes of AMP spring-probe connectors are customizable, some basic features, such as precision screw-machined, gold plated contacts and 94V-0 rated housing materials prevail. Contacts may be rated as high as 2 amps depending on connector configuration with life cycles up to 50,000. Additional custom features such as hold-downs and other design enhancements that can improve the customer's product design and assembly process are available.
