BSX Climbs More Than 62 Points to Reach New High

Hamilton, BERMUDA (January 29, 1998) -- The Bermuda Stock Exchange (The BSX) Index today climbed 62.30 points to reach a new record high.

The jump is the second largest since The BSX introduced daily trading in September 1995. The BSX climbed a record 68.09 points on August 13, 1997.

The index closed today at 1,539.76 on a volume of 30,292 shares. Five issues traded and all five advanced. The Bank of Bermuda traded up $2 to close at $34 on a volume of 5,668. The Bank of N. T. Butterfield closed up $0.75 at $16.75 on a volume of 21,949. Bermuda Home advanced $0.50 to close at $9.50 on a volume of 500, while Argus Insurance closed up $0.25 at $17 on a volume of 175.

Bank of Bermuda warrants also traded, closing up $0.25 at $8 on a volume of 2,000.

"The Index has climbed steadily since mid-year 1997," said Chief Executive officer of The BSX, Mr. W. William A. Woods. "The recent growth of the Index over the past two months reflects the continued growth of the market and the strength of the newly revitalised BSX."
