Bank of Butterfield Announces Scholarship and Bursary Winners

Hamilton, Bermuda: 31 July, 2001 - Bank of Butterfield is pleased to announce the winners of the Bank's 2001 scholarships and bursaries, presented on Tuesday 31 July. The recipient of The Bank of Butterfield Postgraduate Scholarship in Memory of Sir A. Dudley Spurling is Joanna Sherratt and the recipient of The Bank of Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship in Honour of Sir Harry D. Butterfield is Tara Kessaram. Awarded for the first time this year, Butterfield Overseas Education Bursaries have been presented to Tariq Lynch-Wade, Keilyn Lightbourne and Katrina Kawaley-Lathan.

Each year, Bank of Butterfield awards two scholarships to students who show outstanding academic achievement. They are valued at $20,000 per year and are tenable for up to four years. The Bank of Butterfield Postgraduate Scholarship in memory of Sir A. Dudley Spurling is awarded to a student who has already obtained a university degree, and is now seeking a postgraduate degree. The Bank of Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship in honour of Sir Harry D. Butterfield is awarded to a student pursuing a first undergraduate degree.

Joanna Sherratt, recipient of the Bank of Butterfield Postgraduate Scholarship in Memory of Sir A. Dudley Spurling, is studying toward a BMBS in Medicine at the University of Nottingham. She is a graduate of Bermuda High School for Girls and the University of Oxford. The recipient of the Bank of Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship in Honour of Sir Harry D. Butterfield, Tara Kessaram, a graduate of Bermuda High School for Girls and United World College, will begin her studies toward a MBBS in Medicine at University College London this fall.

This year the Bank introduced the Butterfield Overseas Education Bursaries. These are awarded annually, based on financial need, extra-curricular activities and academic potential, to students pursuing undergraduate degrees overseas. Each bursary is valued at $20,000 per year and is tenable for up to two years.

Bursary recipient Tariq Lynch-Wade was educated at Berkeley Institute and Florida Community College. He is studying toward a degree in Aviation Management and Flight Operations at Jacksonville University in Florida. Recipient Keilyn Lightbourne was educated at Warwick Secondary School, Bermuda College and Mount Saint Vincent University. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Randolph-Macon Women's College in Virginia. The third Butterfield Bursary winner, Katrina Kawaley-Lathan, was educated at Saltus Grammar School and will begin her Bachelor of Science at Queen's University in Ontario.
