New President for Bank of Butterfield

Hamilton, BERMUDA (December 12, 1997) --"I am pleased to report that the Board of Directors have appointed Mr. M. Calum Johnston as President and Chief Executive Officer effective Monday, 15 December, 1997.

Mr. Johnston is an international banker of long standing, and has held increasingly senior appointments in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and North America. His most recent position was Executive Vice-President, International Banking with The Bank of Nova Scotia.

The Board of Directors believes the Bank is most fortunate in being able to secure the services of an executive of the calibre and stature of Mr. Johnston. Mr. Johnston will continue the strategic initiatives of our strategic plan: building core businesses and prudently managing expenses.

The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited, established in 1858 in Hamilton, Bermuda has $4.4 billion in assets and over $15 billion under administration. The Bank, which serves institutional and individual clients, has its headquarters and four branches in Bermuda, as well as offices in Grand Cayman, Guernsey, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
