TyCom a Major Supporter of New Smithsonian Exhibit

PEMBROKE, Bermuda, 20 March, 2001 - TyCom Ltd. (NYSE: TCM; BSX: TCM) today announced that it has provided historical information, undersea equipment and funding for the development of a major new Smithsonian Libraries exhibition. Entitled "The Underwater Web: Cabling the Seas", the exhibition celebrates 150 years of undersea communications. It opens March 23rd and will run for an entire year in the Smithsonian Libraries Gallery, located in the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

Smithsonian Libraries Director Nancy E. Gwinn noted, "This year-long Smithsonian Libraries' show will inform today's Internet users about the little known history behind the birth of global communications back in 1851. It will be surprising to many that the online version of "The Underwater Web" will be carried to countries around the world on the very same underwater cables looked at in this exhibition. We are grateful for TyCom's generous support of this show and are confident that it will be a great success."

"We are honored to play a major role in developing and funding this exhibit," said Neil Garvey, President and CEO of TyCom. "There have been tremendous advances made in telecommunications since the first underwater cables were laid, and it's exciting to see the chronology of developments so well-presented. As a pioneer and a leader in our industry, we are pleased to support the Smithsonian in putting together this exhibit."

Bernard S. Finn, curator of electricity collections at the Museum of American History, and guest curator for "The Underwater Web: Cabling the Seas" exhibition, assembled objects from the museum's collections as well as items donated by TyCom. Among the TyCom contributions are lengths of cable manufactured by the company for various systems, undersea optical amplifier equipment, and photographs and video footage of the undersea cable installation process.

Members of TyCom management will be attending a special reception held the evening of March 22nd for the opening of the exhibit. Those invited include Smithsonian Regents, representatives of the Smithsonian Corporate Membership program, as well as representatives of various trade and professional associations headquartered in Washington, D.C. A press preview will be held on Tuesday, March 20th at 9:00 a.m. An online version of the exhibition may be viewed at www.sil.si.edu.
